This is a stretch of frozen land which covers the northeastern part of Velious. In the east, a large ice bridge connects to the islands of Iceclad Ocean while in the northwest, a break in the mountains leads to the Great Divide. Kael Drakkel, the city of giants, sits in the southwest while a dragonhead portal to Sleeper's Tomb sits in the south.

Many factions have taken up residence here. There is a frost giant fort and a few Coldain outposts. As well, the Ry`Gorr orc clan is well-established here with a large fort (which also houses the entrance to the Crystal Caverns) and a few outlying camps. These are in addition to the area's wildlife: From the benign rhinos, mammoths, and snow bunnies to the highly aggressive griffins, manticores, and cougars; you'd best watch over your shoulder while hunting here.

I am a 35 ranger with descent maybe even good equipment, i am currently lvling in the otherthere and i am enjoying the zone but cant help but notice that most of the things in the zone are blue to me (there still are some reds yellows and this is not including goons) and i have heard good things about the loot/exp in the eastern wastes i have yet to check it out because i dont want to go there and then come right back to kunark, so is ew a better place to lvl for a 35 ranger than the overthere? any opiinions would help...even just a yes/no would be great.

When I heard about the great exp you can get soloing Mammoths here I decided to take my ranger on over. I was level 49 so I was on a regular experience level. I just set up camp by bridge, buffed myself up, memmed Panic Animal and Snare and set out. Snare a mammoth then pull it to a safe location. Cast Panic Animal and hack away. Make sure your view is in swing mode so you can view the whole area and watch for adds. The mammoths have a ton of HP's so you better be patient. Great exp if done right. I got 1 blue every 20 minutes when I pulled them back to back.

Safe hunting fellow rangers.

Hmm, high 30s, low 40s should be good enough.
some starting tips
# Oct 18 2001 at 2:28 AM Rating: Decent
I came to VElious at 45, bored of static chain pulling in DL and i learned following (mosty info for velious - ew newcomers):

1. Like almost everywhere i go, i try to find a map, its really good for orientation and for quick escape, when needed. Nice maps are available at caster`s realm, also eqatlas. So get a map before heading to ew. I use maps even when im ranger with very high tracking and sense heading.

2. Yesterday, i tried to gain some good xp at animals here. I was campping near dragon bridge to iceclad, having memmed snare and panic animal and invigor (coz of my wurmy). As we all know, rangers cant almost solo, last mob i soloed was a tesch mas gnoll in SK at lvl 33. But here with animals and our fear spell its abit different. Just snare&fear everything and watch for adds, and u`ll get decent xp, like i do at hell level 45. But if u solo, be prepared for long fights, wich could be boring abit. LAnd near dragon bridge is flat, which is good - not like overthere ;] So soloing here is really rangers paradise. Druids can have also decent xp here, but they have to med alot after fight, which takes time. Maybe duo ranger [snare and fear] and another tank would rule this zone.

3. When i first went to Thurgadin for bind, i went there with my 48 druid friend, and she kinda forgot to remove her wolf form = guards at thurgadin front gate explained her not to use it here;]

4. Be careful when pulling rygorrs from their keep. New zone always causes problems, like when i came to overthere, there was different style of pulling if we compare it to RM giats, or DL. I went into rygorr keep, walking around, i saw no mobs. But suddenly my displayed rolled with messages "filthy half-elves must die" or whatever was it - rygorr oracle and some elite guards were after me. Yes, the CAN SEE through walls. SO be careful here and let pulling someone else first to learn some tricks. [i should have snared then and then run, i didnt do that so they were running after me with Sow speed, so watch out, elite was slashing for 109dmg]

5. Con everything, so u that u will learn if they see invis or not

6. Good luck, hope this will help u ! [excuse mistakes contained here, english is not my native lang.]

I was feeling rather confident by the Ry'Gorr fort when I decided to solo within the fort grounds. I killed one Centurion after a tough fight, rested up and started walking around the inner building. Suddenly my pet gets attacked through the walls by a Mystic and a Leggo comes from behind and starts spanking me around. I didn't make it five steps when i got geeked (those Leggos still CON red to me).
Looks like I'll either be grouping by the fort or soloing the zone...although the one time I was in CC was fun. I wonder if I could bank there?

Thurgadin. My research has indicated that there are no innately KOS races to the Coldain. Other than that, you might consider raising facion with the giants and bind in Kael... course that would totally preclude binding in Thurg, as well as LOTS of other problems, but hey... such is life.

Actually, I've been soloing the Ry'Gorr Centurians at the camp just north of the bridge for a few days now as a 32 ranger. The centurians con from blue to red, so check before pulling.

Here's my method: Make sure all buffs are fresh, get where you can see the interior of the hut and cast Harmony on the Orc in the middle of the hut, then Harmony the orc at the campfire that you don't want to pull. Pull the remaining orc with snare, kite backwards until you are near the bridge and cast Stinging Swarm, just ranger kite him (archery and DD) until he's half life, then melee him until he's dead. Re-cast swarm if it wears off in the middle of the fight.

I've managed to solo blue through yellow centurians this way and usually end up with 30m and about 60% life left with blues. Med up and repeat... it's slow but fun. And I love killing orcs!

RE: Ranger Solo

EW is solo ranger heaven.
Mid 30s you can start with cougars if you are carefull and hunt next to the dragon bridge. Things to watch for are the Dervishes and the Snow Griffins. Now at 45 I can still find blue con cougars so occasionally you will have to zone when your fear spell gets multiple resists. The griffins are the only mobs that are faster than sow. As you level you can hunt Kodiaks and Mammoths for fast leveling. The high quality tundra kodiak pelts are a rare item used for high level quest and can be sold for quite abit. You can also find plenty of pickup groups all over when you get board of soloing.
RE: Ranger Solo
# Jul 10 2001 at 8:49 AM Rating: Decent
Very easy to solo as a rancer or druid here. just do the snare fear ant kill away. Start out with the snow cougers first though less chance of resisting the fear. I leveled my 32 druid all the way through 35 this way.

Charm Kiting
# Jun 08 2001 at 7:37 PM Rating: Default
For enchanters at lvl 39+ this zone can be exception for charm soloing. all you have to do is use our level 4 mez to mez a tundra(preferably starting out with this is the best pet) and then charm it with cajoling and then celerity it, then wait till mez break and go out have some fun, but monitor your pets hp and help if necessary. Then get the pet to guard a spot and use cancel magic, strip enchanment or a spell of that nature to break charm and get rid of your speed spell. Then just root and nuke. Have fun

Hey, Dola...

Aside from the celerity buff, do you think this technique would work for a druid using Beguile Animal spell? It seems to me that with such low charisma my animal charms don't last very long so I probably don't have to worry about dispelling the charm, but I would like to try charm/fear kiting here. Until know I have been quad kiting in Velious with success but this sounds like it would be fun to try.

What I've Found
# Jun 04 2001 at 9:37 AM Rating: Excellent
Welps, I've moved my cleric to Eastern Wastes. Had been camping inside the kodiac cave in Great Divide for a number of levels (35 to 38 in a few days). Anyways, we started by going to the bridge and pulling but didn't quite work out, too far to pull and get a lot of easy stuff.

On one trip from Thurg to bridge we stumbled upon the Ulthorks and baby seal section along north beach, and been there ever since!

This is some of the fastest and best xp/loot ratio I've seen, and I've been to Overthere, Dreadlands, Frenzy, etc. Well might not be better that frenzy but definatly one of the best outside areas.

Once group get solid, you can literally pull constantly, and sometimes don't have to pull, since there are so many adds, they come to you!

The loot is insane, I've gotten well over 500 plats just as my share from them. Everyone else in my gang has gotten the same. The ulthork tusks are worth quite a pretty penny to some folks, and they will pay thru the nose for them. Expeccially if you have 12, since it takes 4 to do the quest =) Don't sell for less that 25 plats each. I ask 40 each, and get it! Remember they are getting a blue diamond worth 3-4K so will gladly pay whatever.

Also on the north beach Ulthork armour drops, which has some of the most bizzarre stats of all the sets I've head about. Every piece has a plus and negative stats, I hear byt he time you get a whole set, you come out even, but gain AC. Kinda dumb but oh well. The north side has the bracers, gloves, boots and sleeves only. Of all these the only ones worht anything are the sleeves, 3 wis -3 dex. Wearing a set myself. They are not lore and sold one pair for 100 and another for 150. The boots are 3 dex and -3 wis.

Hang onto any HQ walrus or Ulthork pelts that drop, tailors are constantly patrolling north shore asking all the groups, 10 plat a pop. Hardly anything else will sell to vendors or players, destroy all the non stacking meat and odds and ends, vendors "give you absolutly nothing for this item"

I've recently hit level 40 up here, and some things are turning green, took a quick expedition to South Shore, and saw some Ulthork Man-O-Wars, yellow to level 40, hit uber hard, but heard they drop the Ulthork Breastplate and Pants. hmmmm

Oh also, killing Ulthork will raise faction with Othimir and SnowGnolls. Othimir are the Otters in Cobalt Scars, they have a couple vendors and are the ones who do the tusk quest. ANd snow gnolls are the guys in iceclad. I'm sure they both love me by now =)

If anyone is on Mith Marr and need a group, I'll be along South Beach hunting man o wars (no not nude sunbathing)

It's hard to get groups in EW, everyone is soloing except for the Ry'Gorr fort, and even there, there is a bunch of soloing. On a different note, Snow Griffens, snare them, and it shuts down there sow. If u don't have snare, go to CC and get a couple of the cyrstal web catchers, or something like that, they have 2 charges of root.
Just Some Stuff I Learned
# May 06 2001 at 9:20 PM Rating: Decent
Hi just talking about stuff I've learned in my adventure in Eastern Wastes.

1. No matter what, don't jump of the bridge. I know you're thinking "Well, duh," but when the Shadow Knight in our group cast Fear on a bear it ran off and the SK followed it. -4 bubs of HP in 2 seconds. Ouch.

2. The griffins are pure evil. While our tank was pulling, our druid got to the bottom of the bridge to look around. A elder snow griffin coasted over and killed him in less than a second. I'm not exagerating. That's the fastest death I've ever seen, not even Spectres can kill that quick.

3. While the snowy bottom looks like part of a bridge, the mobs don't count it as that. They more find it as a walkway to try a brisk jog. Pull at least to the first arch. A battle with a rhino is bad enough without a couple cougars/ dervishes/ griffins deciding that killing you looks like fun.

4. Not only are griffins strong, but smart. I think Verant helps them out too. When my group was camping the orc hut near the bridge, a griif an and elder griff pass by us. About 5 minutes they pass by again, and 5 minutes they pass by again. So i figure np, I'll just look out for them. About 5 seconds after I think this, it starts snowing.

5. After you zone into Crystal Caverns, the orcs that were chasing you wander off. That means you can zone right back in (unless someone just zoned.) This sounds good but it really isn't that helpful. As the orcs wander throughout the whole fort, this just means all you can do is stay in the little room with the teleport.

Well I hope that helps. Good luck everyone.

Hunting Ry'Gorr Fort

70 posts
I've been hunting around Ry'Gorr fort and Crystal Caverns for a couple weeks now as both a 35 cleric and a 40 paladin. This is one of the coolest (sorry) spots to hunt, but there are some common instructions people need.

1. Avoid the main building. Don't touch it, don't go near near it. (Until you're ready to go inside and pull.) The Chief, Oracle and Elites WILL agro through through the walls.

2. Know where the CC zone is and don't be afraid to us it! When you inevitably find the Chief and Oracle on your tail, please don't bring them back to the group. The best pullers make mistakes and zone to save the group. Before you try pulling from the fort, take the extra 30 seconds to locate the shed with the crystal and maybe even click the crystal so you know it works.

3. Stop and watch your pulls. There are no defined paths in and around the fort. Monsters will bump into walls, and many nasty deaths result from a single centurion attracting the attention of the chief. Also, an orc which gets "stuck" on the outside wall will teleport to you and get some free hits. With SoW and hopefully snare (rangers are the best pullers here), you have plenty of time to walk backwards around the inside of the wall, leading the orc safely to the gate. This also gives you time to consider the previous tip.

4. Don't hang out around the crystal. The main building is too close for any trains to be announced, and it is harder to click that crystal than you think.

There are three different types of parties here. It helps to understand your party's role when selecting recruits and pulls.

1. The uber-group will be found camped inside the main building. Personally, I wish these guys were off on a Plane fighting a dragon, but you'll sometimes for a bunch of 50+ people hording any Elite or better that pops. Don't expect to get any decent loot with this bunch of underachievers around.

2. The high-30's and low-40's. Focused on pulling Elites, the blacksmiths, and maybe with luck the chief. Tough mobs like these are normally fear kited and sometimes take 4 minutes or more to die. If you kill the chief, announce it via SHOUT, loot and ZONE to CC. Those Avengers will mash you like rotten tomatoes.

3. A mid-30's group can get a lot of experience, a few orc fang earrings and maybe a necklace or two. These guys will die fast if an elite comes for them. Focus on pulling centurions and legos from the four pillars and the two gate pops. Your downfall will be that level 40 you recruit who insists that you can take just one Elite. If you find you die too much here, move into Crystal Caverns.

The easiest way through EW from the bridge is
to hang a right and get on ocean bank follow the ocean all the way north and then west stay on the bank and you run into nothing till you get to the ulthork beach and even then almost always the Ulthorks are being killed so are to busy to aggro you. keep following the river and you hit some hills that start pushing you south (the zone wall is here) . follow the zone wall and it will dump you in the passages to GD. Just be careful in the hills there are wandering snow giants here but don't worry too much there aggro range is small and you can here them stompin around.
As for GD to thur best advise already given.

Just to get from iceclad to Thurgadin is easy. Just make it to the Dragon Bridge to get into the Eastern Wastes from Iceclad and go West/Northwest past the Frost Giant fort to the Great Divide zone(printing maps will help as i don't know locs). Once in GD, head straight west to river and follow that river north to waterfall. Go THROUGH the waterfall and you'll go through a false wall into Thurgadin.

There doesn't seem to be any particular path in EW that is entirely safe, though maybe you can skirt the edges. However, I've gone through the zone with invisibility, and I have yet to see a mob that sees through it. Even the Snow Griffons, which are Druid casters, have yet to /con anything other than neutral while I'm invisible.

If you can invis yourself, cool. If not, you can probably beg it off of a group who are hunting from the bridge.

Good luck

Druids and Soloing at 30

I just came here last night and love this zone. With so many animals around a Druid can always get experience.

I first ensnare the annimal (snow cougars, tundra kodiaks, wooly mammoths - con'd yellow to me) and then cast Panic Animal (that level 1 spell that is hardly ever used). Since it is such low mana (10) if it is resisted I just keep on casting. After the animal is feared I cast immolate and creeping crud. Since the animal is feared it gets full damage from the DoTs!

Wala! Cooked cougar on a stick.

Word to the wise: Do not get curious and see if you can stand on the edge of the bridge and look down. I did and fell for 10000 hp in damage.

I heard that. Unfortunetely, its fairly accurate. That bridge is at least as tall as many modern suspension bridges, and I hear that if you're falling from that height, water is no softer a surface to fall on than concrete. Surface tension.

And learn to love the cougars (I kind of like them, myself.) Come 35, you'll be teaching yourself to quad kite on them. Crap loot, but very nice exp, and you'll occassionally get a Cougar Claw Earring which is one sweet item (pretty rare, though. I soloed them from 36-38, and only got two.) After that, Dire Wolves or Kodiaks. They're not hard at all to isolate, you can take the cougars either just north of the Tower of Frozen Shadow on that island, or just East of the gnome camp on that one. In either case, drag your pull to the shoreline once you've got four, and zap away. The exp is phenominal.
Orcs at the Bridge
# Mar 02 2001 at 5:15 PM Rating: Default
Spent a nice morning solo camping the orc camp at the base of the bridge. Needed harmony to separate the two at the fire, and the three in the huts, but that was all. Once the camp was broken, they have about a 25 min spawn time...so you get them spaced out to killing one evry five minutes and you are home free. I'd say they averaged about three out of every five were blue to me (43 druid), and about half the green ones gave up xp too. In five hours of camping i got 2 and 1/2 bubs of xp, numerous weapons, 5 orc fang earrings, words and runes, about 110+p ...but NO armor! Does it not drop anywhere but the fort?
My routine was to snare away from the camp, root, dot with immo and Doom, then med and repeat. Hardly ever meleed, and as long as you pull them East, and med east of them, you dont even have to worry about wandering monsters. It was so easy, i got bored, but hung on hoping to get some armor.

Hope this helps...

Armor Drops off Elites and the Oracle at the fort and the BP only drops off the chief.

BTW just a heads up, when you kill the chief be ready to zone, sometimes 6 Avengers spawn and have a zone wide aggro on those that killed their Chief and double for 150, they seem to despawn once to offending group is dead or zoned and no one else has pissed them off. They can be taken one at a time, they are as tough as the chief except they seem to have higher Magic Resist.

I have been messing around in EW for a long time and they only thing that i see that gives rygorr armor consistantly is rygorr elite's at the fort. I myself have only seen the chief, elites, and one of the other rygorr's drop any armor. So you will probably be better off looking for armor at the fort.

btw. there seems to be a lot of training and other such in this area so watch out and remember if you get into trouble zone into CC

Does anyone know the loc of the ledge where, if you fall off it, you lose 10,000 hp instantly?? Just curious before I go running around the zone =)

Me too, near the Kael entrance. Was running in 3rd person view to see if those Frost Giants were near me...kablam you have taken 10000 damage:(
There's a moral there, methinks.

I got a necro to locate my corpse later, and we nearly died again, when I autofollowed her over the cliff, but I hadn't got SOW on, which probably saved my life :)

Later on, I won some Ry'Gorr leggings which cheered me up no end :)
