This solo task becomes available by completing 'Realign the Lines'.

Upon completion of the previous task:

Noble Sivrn shakes his head in admiration, 'I would have never imagined that you could solve the alignment puzzles so quickly... Perhaps you could even solve the more [challenging] alignment puzzles.

You say, 'A more challenging puzzle?'

Noble Sivrn nods, 'Considered impossible to solve by many, they have been attempted without success many times over the centuries. Would you care to [accept] the challenge? Be warned, it has driven many to insanity.

You say, 'I will accept the challenge!'

Noble Sivrn bows solemnly, 'I hope you are successful... If you manage to correctly solve the shifted alignment puzzle and retain your sanity, I will reward your efforts with a token of my esteem for your intellect.'

You have been assigned the task 'Broken Lines'.

Speak to Mahatototarit about puzzles 0/1 (Jewel of Atiiki)

You say, 'Hail, Mahatototarit'

Mahatototarit says 'I have devised a more challenging game of alignment, tell me if you would like to play [align shifted]. The rules remain the same, however after a specific number of moves, I will rearrange the board.'

Solve the game of align shifted 0/1 (Jewel of Atiiki)

This is the same game as in previous tasks, but with alignment shift. This may happen two times or more during the course of the game.

During the game the player only will see this message when the board changes:

Mahatototarit says 'Beware, I am changing the positions on the board, observe carefully.'

This is supposed to be completed in 31 total moves, it appears. A lot of those moves will seem to be "wasted" moves and that is the whole trick to this. Most of these moves are just buying time. Mahatototarit will essentially set the board up for you to move the appropriate piece where you want it. After the 3rd Alignment shift, if done right, you should be able to finish within about 3 or 4 moves.

You say, 'I'm finished'

Upon an incorrect game:

Mahatototarit says 'A noble attempt, unfortunately you did not solve the puzzle in the minimum number of moves.'

Upon a correct game:

Mahatototarit says 'Well done, you have correctly solved the puzzle.'

Report your success to Noble Sivrn 0/1 (Jewel of Atiiki)

You say, 'Hail, Noble Sivrn'

Noble Sivrn blinks in apparent amazement, 'I cannot begin to contemplate the skill required to solve such a difficult puzzle. Perhaps you could even unravel the Conundrum of Death itself... How one would even begin to solve that puzzle mystifies me completely.

Once you have completed this task arc, you can do the "Efreeti Death Mask" quest for a Spectre Illusion item.

after trying various solutions here and on Bonzz.com site for this problem, i ended up seeing a solution that worked perfect and seemed to actually make sense to me.
everytime i tried this the efreeti were starting in different columns, and i guess i never figured out (using any other guides) where the final column actually is.
the efreeti start in the Starting column. when Mahatotarit moves Gigias (first, others subsequently) he moves Gigias to the null column. then you move Gigias to the 3rd column that he hasnt been in yet, then that is the Finish column.

all credit to Betenoire on thesafehouse.org!

Align Shifted
Say accept to Noble Sivrn, then head to Sphinx, say puzzles, challenging, give her a token of alignment, and say align shifted.

1)Move the smallest guy anywhere 15 times, the 15th move being back to the starting point.
2)The tallest guy will be shifted to the null column. Then move the tallest guy to the finish column.
3)Move the smallest guy anywhere 7 times, the 7th move being back to the starting point.
4)The 2nd tallest guy will be shifted to the null column. Then move the 2nd tallest guy to the finish column.
5)Move the smallest guy anywhere 3 times, the 3rd move being back to the starting point.
6)The 3rd tallest guy will be shifted to the null column. Then move the 3rd tallest guy to the finish column.
7)Move the smallest guy to the null column.
8)Move the 4th tallest guy to the finish column.
9)Move the smallest guy to the finish column.

This is the solution to align shifted, when done say finished or done to Sphinx. Then head to Noble Sivrn and hail to complete, then hail him again and you should receive Platinum Efreeti Mask. This is done one the eastern board

It seems like people are getting/posting different move counts over the years, I'm not sure if it's changing or the amount of moves she'll let you ***** up before failure just allows for it. Here's the minimum from a couple characters I just did:

15 moves: Move Tiniz, aiming to end up with Tiniz in the SOURCE row at 15(count a few ahead for whether you alternate between 2 or 3 rows)
16th move: Gigias to TARGET row
17-23: more Tiniz moves as earlier(end Tiniz in SOURCE row)
24: Lathik to TARGET
25-27: Move Tiniz across all three rows to end back at SOURCE for 27
28: Medious to TARGET
29: Tiniz to FREE
30: Simulat to TARGET
31: Tiniz to TARGET

Three rows
Start Row (obviously the row where all the pieces begin)
Target Row (where all the pieces finish up)
Free Row

Begin
Tiniz to Free Row

Tiniz to Target Row and then to Start row (do these two moves repeatedly until Mahatototarit rearranges the board on you)
If I recall correctly Mahatototarit has moved Gigias to the Free Row so

Gigias to Target Row

Tiniz to Free Row
Tiniz to Target Row and then the Start Row (do these two moves repeatedly until Mahatototarit rearranges the board on you)
Mahatototarit has moved Lathik to the Free Row so

Ok so after hours upon hours of trial and error I have figured out that in order to get the puzzle solved the aforementioned strategy works as long as you don send Tiniz back and forth too many times while waiting on her to change the board. It takes moving Tiniz precisely 13 times for the first rearrange. Precisely 8 times for the second rearrange, and precisely two moves for the final rearrange and then follow the strategy ftw! Many hours of frustration and solutions only to be told too many moves later I figured it out. I even thought it was a timer thing but no. The idea is to move Tiniz back and forth those precise number of times to trigger her to rearrange the board. Whew!

I did this and it worked as posted, HOWEVER, you have to pay close attention to what direction Mahatototarit says (East, Center, or West) after you hand in the Token of Alignment. Whichever direction she says is what the Target row is

TASK #5 -- BROKEN LINES

1) JEWEL OF ATIIKI: Head back to Noble Sivrn, if you aren't all ready there.

Hail him and follow along, or just try saying, "Accept" to get the task called, "Realign the Lines."

This entire task takes place in this zone.

.

2) If you didn't hold on to any Token of Alignment, you will need at least one (1) more.

.

3) Head back to Mahatototarit.

Hail and follow along or just try saying "Alignment."

Mahatototarit will ask for a Token of Alignment. Hand it over, then say, "Align shifted."

.

4) Back to the same game board as before.

While this one sounds scary on the surface, it is actually easier than the others (and uses the same NPC's).

The winning moves are as follows:

· Tiniz to Free Row

· Tiniz to Target Row and then to Start row (do these two moves repeatedly until Mahatototarit rearranges the board on you)

· Gigias to Target Row

· Tiniz to Target Row and then the Free Row (do these two moves repeatedly until Mahatototarit rearranges the board on you)

· Lathik to Target Row

· Tiniz to Target Row

· Tiniz to Free Row

· Tiniz to Start Row (Mahatototarit should now rearrange the board one last time)

· Medious to Target Row

· Tiniz to Free Row

· Simulat to Target Row

· Tiniz to Target Row (this should do it, total of 31 moves)

.

5) Head back over to Mahatototarit.

Say, "finished" to complete this step.

.

6) Head back to Sivrn.

Hail him to complete the task and get about 1 AA in XP!

A few notes:

· To make them move, you simply tell them, EAST, WEST or CENTER.

· If their way is not blocked, they will take a round about path in the direction you asked them to move.

· You have to get them realigned in a certain number of moves, or fail.

· I am impressed anyone figured this out, but there is a trick… so pay attention.

· The directions I am about to give you are not specifically based on East, West and Center.

· They are based on where the NPC's are and where you need them to go.

· So... where the NPC's are is the START Row.

· Where the NPC's need to move to is the TARGET Row.

· The other row is the FREE Row.

· Looking at the game board, you now need to associate each of those rows with a direction.

· So, if they are in the most western row to start, the Start Row is WEST and so forth.

·

this stupid game named EQ sometimes sucks more than only a bit...
The Sphinx doesnt stop eating Tokens of Alignment, even if you use the trigger words "challenging" and after that "align shifted"... always continues to ask about challenging or align 3/4/5 even with giving these Tokens of Alignment...

SoE forgets that a game is a GAME which should be designed to make FUN. If your hard played items disappear always only because of this nasty stupidity that they shouldnt wonder if Million of people prefer WoW or Age of Conan...

Does anybody has a hint, how to avoid this sphinx eating my Tokens?
The above does NOT work in this combination at moment...
only worked once before but i failed the game.. after that no game possible any more :(

Edit:
Be careful, the Sphinx does not tell anything about the start of the game "align shifted" and the Djinns would not move if you are at the distance of the sphinx. It looks like the game has not started. If you come closer to the board then you can command the Djinns. And the Sphinx still eats Tokens even when the game is at work, really annoying thing!

Starting "Align Shifted" Game
# Nov 24 2007 at 8:18 PM Rating: Decent
In the quest description above, after you receive the quest Broken Lines, you hail Mahatototarit and ask about puzzles and then ...

Mahatototarit says 'I have devised a more challenging game of alignment, tell me if you would like to play [align shifted]. The rules remain the same, however after a specific number of moves, I will rearrange the board.'

The quest description leaves out that you should next say "I would like to play a game of align shifted."

and then proceed to give Mahatototarit a Token of Alignment to actually start the game.

Now you can Solve the Game of Align Shifted.

For those who read all this and it didn't always make much sense,

No matter where you start and where you have to finish, you to move the smallest guy 14 times. Then plan your next move carefully, so that the guy your about to move is NOT in the column you want to end up in. The board will move the largest guy automatically on 15th move. Now you move that large guy that was just moved to the spot you need to have him in at the final setting.
Step one complete!

Now move the little guy again (you've moved 16 times already), so move him 4 times and plan ahead now. You want to end up with the little guy on your starting row again. So 3 moves to do this. On the 3rd move the board is automatically moving the 2nd largest. Now you must move the second largest to the column you want him to end at. (your at move #24 when you've done that)
Step two complete!

Now careful, 3 moves left until board shuffles again. You move the little guy so on the 3rd move he is on the starting row again. The board shuffles and you must use your 28th move to move that middle sized guy to the final row.
Step three completed.

Finally you have 3 moves left. Move the little guy to the empty column. The 2nd smallest to the final and then the smallest and your finished!

first step question
# Jun 24 2007 at 6:11 AM Rating: Decent
"For this walk-through, assume the pieces start in the CENTER, and you must realign them to the EAST column.

This quest is simple. As I stated earlier, there are 15 moves before the first reordering. After 15 moves, Mahatototarit moves the largest piece (gigias) into the west column. Bearing that in mind, you have to reorder the pieces back into the center column where they started, so that after 15 moves you have all the pieces back behind Gigias. The reason for this is so that there are no pieces in either the west OR the east column. This way, once Gigias is moved, it is the smallest in it's column, and will be the smallest in the EAST column, which is the next move you'll make"

The question I have is: How does one do this?
Spoiler
# Apr 07 2007 at 1:08 PM Rating: Decent
Pure Spoiler:

On the 15th, 23rd, and 27th move, land Tiniz to the starting row for the puzzle. The largest (Gigias, Lathik, and Medious respectively) in the starting row will move out on their own to the non finishing row, where it can be moved to the finish row in a single move.

Blammo, 31 moves and you're done.

question!

How can you get back to your starting point on your 15th move? It shuffles on the 15th move but the smalest guy can be back on his starting point on the 16th move but then it takes 1 extra move each time and you end up with 4 extra moves at the end

I was having a similar problem, took me awhile to see it. But on the first move, you move the little piece 3 times, instead of 2. Say you start in middle, you move west/east first, then to opposite side, then back to center. This is how you get it set to odd. I had to repeat this little 3 move twice more, to end up with the placement for the final 4 moves. Hope that helps.

Condensed moves for me were, Aligning West Row, starting in center.

Tiniz west, then east, then center
Tiniz east, then center (repeated this 5 times)((6 Total times))

First Shift
Gigias west
Tiniz west, then east, then center
Tiniz east, then center (repated this once)((2 Total times))

Second Shift
Lathik west
Tiniz west, then east, then center

Final Shift
Medious west
Tiniz east
Simulat west
Tiniz west

Finished

Tiniz west, then east (repeat 5 times)

First Shift
Gigias center
Tiniz center, then west, then east
Tiniz west, then east (repated this once)((2 Total times))

Second Shift
Lathik center
Tiniz center, then west, then east

Final Shift!
Medious center
Tiniz west
Simulat center
Tiniz center

Finished

This got me through, thanks!

Let me clarify it though. You will not do this as before. Since the pieces get rearranged, it just will not work, you have to figure how to adjust your pieces so they will work after they are rearranged.

I renamed the columns so it won't matter where you start.

"start" - The column you start in when the game starts
"dst" - your desination column given by the quest giver
"idle" - the third column that you can move pieces in but it's not the stating or ending column

Make your 1st 15 moves:
Move Tiniz -> to dest, then idle, then start
Move Tiniz again -> idle, then start (repeated this 5 times)((6 Total times))

Right After the First Shift make 8 moves:
Move Gigias -> to dest
Then move Tiniz -> to dest, then idle, then start
Move Tiniz again -> to idle, then start (repated this once)((2 Total times))

Right after the 2nd shift make 4 moves:
Move Lathik -> to dest
Momw move Tiniz -> to dest, then idle, then start

After the Final Shift move the pieces into position:
Move Medious -> dest
move Tiniz -> idle
Move Simulat -> dest
Move Tiniz -> dest

If wondering about how to move the pieces...

You can stand far away from the piece you want to move, no need to walk up and hail it.

Just target the piece you want to move and type west, center, or east.

In my case I have the 10-key mapped to hotbar #2.
10key 1 is West
10key 2 is Center
10key 3 is East

You can have 2 genies moving to whatever spot at the same time, and it works fine.
But keep in mind - speed is NOT your friend here )

Tiniz seems to be bratty for me... sometimes doesn't move on first command.

Empty is in the NE corner.

I would bet that it is NOT necessary to farm and wear all the armor pieces. The armor only is used to give clues as to how to solve the puzzle and I think it was coincidence that the first solver was actually wearing it when he solved it. If you havent done your final game of order please test out my theory, the worst it can cost you is a single token of order. Do the game and tell the sphinx done and see if you are prompted to put the armor on or not and if you get the reward or not. You might waste 15 minutes trying it but you could save thousands of people hours farming stuff they dont have to.

There appears to be a reward now. Previously there was not a reward given, and I have heard there is a final reward which is an illusion mask: Spectre.

We'll see about this, but Here is what Noble Sivrn just said to me now after hailing him again. (I previously completed all his tasks)

[Thu Mar 15 23:12:30 2007] Noble Sivrn says 'Forgive me, I seem to have forgotten my promise to honor you with a token of respect for your ability to solve the puzzles that have confounded the most intelligent amongst us... Take this mask. It may seem common to the mortal eye, but for the efreeti, each mask reveals the soul of the being from whom it was created.'

I will be posting my findings concerning the armor pieces under Noble Phren, since he has something to say about them.

After completing Sivrn #5: Hail Sivrn again to receive the Platinum Efreeti Mask.

Then go out and farm all the platinum efreeti armors from various efreetis in the field and in the atiiki task instances. Get the whole set. You should then have 9 total pieces. (I hear you only need 1 bracer, but I had both)

Take the armor pieces to Noble Phren. He will give you a dialogue when hailed, Give him the pieces one by one to reveal the inscriptions. (The write up on these I posted under "Noble Phren" on Illia's.)

Study the inscriptions. You will see it's a new game of Order.

Get a Token of Order, Equip ALL the pieces of armor including the mask, and go play a game of order from Mahatototarit. Disregard his text about the normal game setting and play it out according to what Phren had to say about each inscription. When you have reached the proper order, go to Mahatototarit and say, "Done."

[Sat Mar 17 21:53:57 2007] Mahatototarit says 'A very interesting configuration, you have not exactly solved the puzzle, but you have managed to unlock a pattern that summons our lost Paza from the realm of the dead...'

Paza pops by the game board. Hail him.

[Sat Mar 17 21:54:06 2007] You say, 'Hail, Paza'
[Sat Mar 17 21:54:06 2007] Paza blinks for a moment as he studies you, "Brother, my time is short, I have done as Xanxionusus commanded... I return from the other side with this message, D`nik Belm J`cof Ghap... Etch those words into your memory, and repeat them to Xanxionusus... Aaarrraaaaahhhh... I feel the pull of the other side once again, I beg you, take my mask so that my soul is released from this torment before I am drawn over once again..."

You will receive the Efreeti Death Visage mask on your cursor.

Congrats on your new Illusion Mask!

(I did not get experience, just the mask)
(I also went and did this next part about Xanxionusus but got nothing but this spit back at me)

[Sat Mar 17 22:30:06 2007] You say, 'D`nik Belm J`cof Ghap'
[Sat Mar 17 22:30:06 2007] Xanxionusus peers at you intently for a moment, then looks away and begins to whisper quietly in a strange voice, "Paza has upheld the bargain, the recompense is granted as agreed... D`nik Belm J`cof Ghap!" the words fade as Xanxionusus fixes his gaze on you, "Although I am sure you acted out of ignorance, your assistance was useful... It would be best if you left now, I have many thoughts upon which to contemplate."

Both times I've tried this so far, the first reordering comes after 15 moves, and puts the largest piece into the column that is neither the start or the finish column. I just need more tokens of alignment to figure out at what number of moves the next reordering comes. I'll update this post as I get new information.
__________________________

Update: took me 2 more tries to successfully complete this. The first was simply to count the number of moves before each reordering.

For this walk-through, assume the pieces start in the CENTER, and you must realign them to the EAST column.

This way, once Gigias is moved, it is the smallest in it's column, and will be the smallest in the EAST column, which is the next move you'll make.

Mahatototarit moves Gigias WEST.

Now you've got the four in the center column and the largest one in the WEST column. At this point, you've got eight moves before the Sphinx reorders the pieces again. Move Gigias (cuz it's all alone now) EAST (destination column). Now you've got four in the center column, and one in the EAST column. You've got seven moves left. These seven moves are used to move and reorder the pieces once again into the CENTER column, so that on your twenty-third total move, the board looks exactly the way it did after the sixteenth move (which was moving Gigias to the EAST column). Now comes the Sphinx's next move. It'll move the second largest piece (Lathik) WEST, just like it did with Gigias.

Mahatototarit moves Lathik WEST.

Now you've got Gigias in the EAST column, the three smallest in the CENTER column, and Lathik in the WEST column. You have four moves before the next reordering. The first move is to put Lathik behind Gigias in the EAST column. The next three moves are simple. Move Tiniz WEST, then EAST, then back to the CENTER, behind Medious and Simulat. At this point you've got the two largest in the EAST column, and the three smallest in the CENTER column after four moves.

Mahatototarit moves Medious WEST.

Now you've got Gigias and Lathik in the EAST column, Simulat and Tiniz in the CENTER column, and Medious in the WEST column. The sphinx is done moving pieces. Move Medious EAST behind Gigias and Lathik, move Tiniz WEST to his own column, then stack Simulat and Tiniz behind Medious. All pieces should be aligned behind Gigias in the EAST column. Now go tell Mahatototarit you are finished.

Quest completion text:

Mahatototarit says, 'Well done. You have correctly solved the puzzle.'

Kifael says, 'Hail, Noble Sivrn'

Noble Sivrn blinks in apparent amazement, 'I cannot begin to contemplate the skill required to solve such a difficult puzzle. Perhaps you could even unravel the conundrum of death itself... How one would even begin to solve that puzzle mystifies me completely.'

Kifael says, 'Hail, Noble Sivrn'

Noble Sivrn smiles, 'It is a pleasure to see you once again, Kifael'

++++++++

Now, contrary to popular belief, I received nothing from Noble Sivrn other than experience. There was no item on my cursor, nor in my inventory. Quite disappointing, imo. There was a lot of thinking involved with this.

Anyway, good luck! I had a blast figuring this one out. )

What's even sadder is that the GM that told you that it was just experience was wrong. Guess it's always just easier to make something up when you don't know.

Not really, experience is the only reward for this specific task. There is, however, at least one more quest in the arc. A developer has stated that there is a reward for completing the arc, but as far as I know no one has yet.

Yeah. I have just completed this too. I was also disappointed. As the beginning of the task suggested he would reward me with "a token of his esteem for my intellect," but apparently he just meant Experience :(

It appears to me that this is completed in 31 moves.. Many of which appear to just be wasted moves as you're not really doing anything but buying time until he shifts the alignment of the board. It's rather imperative when you are "wasting your time" on the moving of the smallest piece. make sure the smallest piece is back in the center by the 15th move.

Mahatototarit says, 'After a specific number of moves, I will rearrange the board.'

To be precise: the 15th move, then the 8th move after that, and then finally, the 4th move after that. From there, you should be complete within four moves after the final Alignment shift.

Quite disappointing that no reward was given besides experience. :(
