Classes: The Druid

Druids - a powerful outdoor class. With the triple ability to heal, inflict direct damage and cast damage over time, druids are a popular solo class, as well as popular in a group. They are also a travelling class, given both sow and teleportation abilities.

How should you play your druid to make the best use of his abilities? What are the best solo strategies? How should the druid be played within a group? What spells are the most and least useful? What skills should you develop?

Post your strategies on how to best play and develop the Druid and read, rate and comment on what others have to say.

1. Heals
2. DPS
3. Buffs
4. Crowd control
5. Evac/Ports
6. Ability to pull

Now druids aren't great at any one of these things, the thing that makes them great is the ability to do any and all of these things within a few seconds.

Druids = versatility

i could be wrong but i dont remember shammy ever getting fd...anyway druids are easier to solo with because they have the ability to snare, which in turn gives them the ability to quad kite, root/rot alot easier aswell. I have shammy and got bored with him quickly so i went back to my druid. As for everything else it all comes down to what class you like playing the best not what other people say about the other classes.

Wow, where to start.

1. We do heal better then shaman.

2. We have better nukes then shaman.

3. Our dots are good. I have no idea how they compare to shaman ones, but dots are pretty irrelevent in today's xp groups. Dots are primarily good for soloing or "named" mobs.

4. Any shaman feigning death isn't feigning Smiley: grin

wouldnt that mean shaman = versatility?

1. Already addressed.

2. I never parse or do anything like that. But there is no way a shaman has significantly better DPS (all other things like gear and AAs being equal).

3. Depends on the group. If the group has a cleric, then yes, shaman have more useful buffs. But add a beastie, and I don't care as much about shammy buffs.

4. When did shaman get Crowd Control? I didn't know they had Harmony or Pacify. Yes, I know all about the AA root.

5. FD ? Do you mean feign death? I assume you are thinking of your monk.

6. The one shining plus to shaman.

7. Yup, got me on that one too. I won't mention charming pets since their aren't many DC or regular charmable pets available.

8. Canni. Gratz, you can harm yourself. We have a number of FT stackable buffs that make harming ourselves not needed.

9. Technically, any class can pull. The real question is can they pull well? Sorry, but I never see shaman pull. Shaman are close to the bottom of the list (basically ahead of wizards), compared to druids who are in the middle range.

Look, its great if you want to come here and have a comparison between the two classes, but please at least know something about the class that you are trying to represent.

I know several of my answers were flip, and can be argued, but considering the little amount of time you put into your posts, I didn't put much thought into my responses. If you really want to know, then I would happily pull stats and comparisions debating the merits of each class.

When it comes to versatility there is no class that can match a druid.

Why do people play druids

My druid was my first character. I wanted a druid because I played AD&D, and it had been my favorite class.

My druid is still my main even though I have several other alts. I love the versatility. I love being able to nuke when I want, I love healing, I love pulling (which I seem to get stuck doing a lot of), I love being able to get the group quickly from point A to point B. I love that I can go out and solo anytime I feel like against almost any mobs (assuming they don't summon). Sure there are a few things I don't like, such as us not ruling any particular game facet and our mana efficiency. But overall, there is simply no class as much fun as the druid. IMO.

I never tried a shaman. My favorite alt is a beastlord, which I felt was a better choice for alt then shaman. They have more DPS, they can offtank with their pets, and they have the weaker version of most shaman buffs. The slowing is just a bonus. I solo my alts a lot, and right now my 55 beastie is still finding lots of zones to go play.

Frankly, I didn't see a shaman's differences from a druid to be intereting enough to consider switching.

My main is a 62 shammy and my first alt is a 57 Druid. Both came up almost exclusively by soloing and I have never PLed. My opinions are based on years of killing stuff alone and always trying to push the envelope to see what either class can do. Things I like better about my druid:

1. Druids can travel! Easiest to appreciate when heading to a far away zone to join up with a group.
2. Druid is a better healer. I am not including HoT spells here.
3. Druid has better DD spells.
4. Druid has snare and tracking. Very useful when going to a zone to find one particular mob only. Shammy has to fight his way in.
5. Druid has forage. A nice touch since I am a tradeskiller.
6. Druid has better AE spells.

I am and always will be a shammy first but that is a matter of personal taste. My druid would not be 57 if I did not enjoy playing that class as well. A druid is absolutely not a poor imitation of a shammy but a worthy class deserving of respect in it's own right. I never saw any benefit in comparing classes. The bottom line is which class do you have fun playing?

I am an officer in a low drama guild. Since, I can get pretty opinionated on here, I don't admit to my char name. They are my opinions and not my guild's, but unfortunately some people can't distinguish the difference.

Well said. Its all a question of preference.

My three favorites are Druid, Beastlord and Shaman in that order, but not so far apart that it makes much of a difference. Actually, my true personal choice would be Warrior, but they are so gear dependent and hard to solo that I find them hard for me as a casual, non-raiding player who has little plat.

I like druid specifically for the ports over all the others. Wasting a buff like Virtue or KEI, for example, while running from one zone to another, is tough on us platless wonders. Add the fact that I can go to the Dreadlands and forage for Nodding Blue Lilies (nice plat in the bazaar) while I kill things, and I am one happy camping druid.

The Beastlord pet is second to none. I meat shield for my pet, so if things start to go south, I can run to the zone. Not only that, but if I run fast enough, I save my pet and any buffs it might have at the time. Now that you can shroud and save both pet buff and pet weapons, the pet has become even more valuable.

The Shammy is a great class. I do like the slows and the ability to wear a little tougher armor; however, the shammy does tend to need the armor, as it will get hit lots more than my druid.

Generally, I will gravitate to these three classes. All three have allowed me to solo most content and I have rarely had problems finding good groups. It always comes down to preference, anyway. I have heard necros are the best overall class, but I just can't get into playing one for any length of time. I always end up back with my three favs.

First off, Druids are my favorite class. I have two accounts and I have been playing on and off for two years. So I have experimented with each class. But none the less. I love druids.

They are a very flexible class. You can do so much with them. Whether it is being the main healer, back up healer, nuker, puller, tanking with the Main Tank cause you're bored, buffing, porting, runner fast, and I can keep going on with the list.

Yes, there are other classes that may be better or worse than the druid. But just like any class you would decide to play on EQ. Your character is only as good as you put your effort into learning how the class works.

Personally I am always finding a new way to play my druid.

Remember this is a game, enjoy yourself. You can have more than one character :) Try them all!

Well, you're looking for help, right? Why ask for someone's help, then turn it down? You're asking if a Druid is better than a Shaman, then argue about it. Can't you just take advice, then base your decision on that?

Just a little suggestion.

Why not a druid?

If Shaman is so great to play why is that
a large amount of the ones I see being played
are in fact bots and most druids I see are mains
or at least secondary used toons?

I'll grant you that Shamans have great powers
but it seems to me that if a Shaman is so great
to play more folks would have them as their main
than as a pocket healer/buffer.

I haven't played a Druid in years, but when I did
I loved it.

I played Shaman and got really bored of it at level 40.
Not a fair trial I suppose but I go with my gut on
things like that.

Just as its been mentioned before, people should play
what they feel like playing and let the rest hang.
